Network for collaboration on sustainability

A network for the mining, iron and steel companies intended to advance collaboration and the interchange of experiences surrounding sustainability issues. The network is jointly co-ordinated by Jernkontoret, Svemin and the Swedish Association of Industrial Employers.

Sustainable development refers to ecological, social and economic sustainability but also includes respect for human rights and anti-corruption compliance.

Sustainability reports are carried out by many of the major mining and steel companies. Operations of companies such as SSAB, Boliden and Outokumpu are reported in accordance with the GRI (Global Reporting Initiative) and reviewed externally. There are also several other standards, performance codes etc that companies observe and that deal with human rights, anti-corruption measures etc.

Furthermore, regulatory compliance is based on the EU’s accounting directive (2013/34/EU) that relates to the companies’ reporting of sustainability and diversity policies.

Under the proposal, large companies and publicly listed companies shall draw up sustainability reports and certain listed companies shall also submit information on their diversity policy in the corporate governance report.

Sustainability work extends from acting on reporting to ensuring that the issue obtains a more strategic role in business development. In many of the steel companies, a development of organisational work on behalf of sustainability is taking place. This then is the starting point for the network of companies within the mining and steel industries as well as the industry trade groups that was established in 2014.
