The first commitment in the common 2050 vision of the Swedish steel industry, Steel Shapes a Better Future, involves leading the technical development.
Swedish steel is exported to 140 of the world’s 190 countries. To handle the international competition the steel companies must continuously develop their products. Steel from Swedish companies, tomorrow even more than today, will contribute to lower climate change emissions and to more sustainable – and fully recyclable – products. It shall also enable the environmental engineering of the future and the energy optimisation required for building sustainable cities and modern agriculture across the world.
The UN’s future development goals for economic sustainability indicate employment, sustainable growth and robust infrastructure as important objectives for eliminating poverty, creating gender equality and promoting better human health.
Sweden’s steel industry is working actively to contribute to this. When basic needs concerning the infrastructure – enabling a society to function properly – are satisfied and living standards rise, the demand for consumer goods also increases; these, too, are largely made of steel or require steel for their production.

Steel is easily the world’s most widely utilised metallic structural material. Sweden’s steel companies deliver specialised products which, during their application phase, result in a longer useful life, stronger structures and lighter transportation.
Product examples and about how we create environmental benefits
The steel industry contributes to the economic basis of Sweden’s standard of living and welfare. This it does through the taxes its pays and the net exports that the industry contributes, but also through creating secure jobs in a decent working environment. The steel industry employs some 17 000 persons directly in the companies, and an additional 30 000 or more persons indirectly in other companies in the value chain.

Economic sustainability is also created through integrating all groups of people in working life, regardless of gender, age, origin or post code. The steel industry creates jobs in all parts of the country; it works actively to increase gender equality in companies and to attract people from different backgrounds. At present, the steel industry creates stable jobs and gives employment in no less than 13 of Sweden’s 21 counties.
