Triple Steelix is an innovation system – a structure to facilitate the conversion of innovations and new ideas into viable enterprise. In this context, innovations do not necessarily refer to the creation of new technological solutions but also to enhanced production methods, more rational use of new steel grades or efficient methods for delivering services of different types.
Regional development with strong local anchor
Triple Steelix is a regional development initiative intended to further strengthen the already successful steel industry in Bergslagen through effective interaction between the business sector, the local community and the world of research.
Triple Steelix covers thirteen municipalities in the three counties of Dalarna, Västmanland and Gävleborg. There is also involvement from County Administrative Boards, institutes of technology/technical universities and regional organisations such as Region Dalarna and Region Gävleborg.
Implementation and financing
–The main responsibility for Triple Steelix lies with Jernkontoret which appoints the board. From Jernkontoret, Maria Engholm is responsible for the project management.
VINNOVA (Swedish Agency for Innovation Systems) has awarded Triple Steelix SEK 60 million in grant funding distributed over ten years (2005–2014). The instigators behind Triple Steelix – i.e. municipalities, companies and institutes of technology/technical universities in Bergslagen – are investing at least an equivalent amount in the project in the form of financial and human resources during the next ten years. The EU has also allocated support to Triple Steelix. The basic funding over the ten-year period amounts to SEK 160 million – to which are added resources in the form of projects and working partnerships.
The major steel producers are all behind this initiative and about 200 SME’s with links to the steel industry are already participating in different ways. Existing networks in the steel industry, both informal and more established ones, play a key role for Triple Steelix.
