How we work

Jernkontoret’s vision is:

“The steel industry exercises leadership over the development of energy and environmental issues within the sector”

Through:

  • The world perceiving steel as a resource-efficient, recyclable base material, and seeing major benefits in an increased use of modern steel products within a sustainable society.
  • The industry having a far-reaching energy and environmental competence concerning processes and products - from mine to recycled scrap.
  •  Customers, the public, our employees, politicians and public authorities having the confidence to turn to us with energy and environmental questions concerning the production and use of steel.
  • The sector having satisfactory, businesslike relations with national and standard-issuing environmental control bodies.

Three councils are leading the work

On the basis of these goals, the sector’s joint work on energy and environmental issues is led by three councils, Jernkontoret’s Energy council, Environment council and Product Ecology council whose members are representatives from the iron and steel companies. These councils provide a forum for the interchange of information and experience while standpoints on different issues are developed.

To these councils are tied committees that run research projects or enquiries and where the companies’ experts are able to exchange know-how relating to specific issues. At present there are committees for airborne pollution issues, residual products and waste, chemicals, water, land and energy efficiency.

Interaction with other organisations

Jernkontoret also collaborates with other national trade associations, mainly those representing Sweden’s base industries as well as with the Confederation of Swedish Enterprise.

Within Europe the collaboration of the steel industry on energy and environmental issues takes place via Eurofer, the European base industry organisations and with trade and industry as a whole via Business Europe. Global co-operation takes place through membership of the World Steel Association.

Influence on energy and environmental initiatives

Jernkontoret monitors and influences all relevant energy- and environment-related initiatives from the EU and Sweden. The basic principle is that regulations should be simple, grounded in science, have a holistic perspective and that our member companies shall be in a position to develop on the basis of the same preconditions as their competitors.
