The network was formed in 2012 on the initiative of Ida Borgh at KTH Royal Institute of Technology. The idea behind a female network emerged from the research project Harriet, within the VINN Excellence Centre Hero-m. Harriet studied how improved gender balance can act as an engine of innovation.
Since 2014, this network’s home has been at Jernkontoret since administrative support could be provided there after the conclusion of the original research project. During the spring of 2017, the Women of Steel network was relaunched in a bid to expand its range of activities and participants as well as to create fresh involvement in the network. It was in connection with this relaunch that the network changed its name from Hera-n to Metallkvinnor (Women of Steel).
- Women of Steel arranges networking events for sharing experiences, enhancing competence and for inspiration.
- Women of Steel aims to raise the profile of women within the relevant sectors and contribute to a greater gender balance in company managements, boards of directors and amongst trade union representatives. This we do, for example, through publishing a list of 100 leading women within the respective industrial sectors. In addition to this, a continuously updated skills list of women in the sector is prepared.
- Women of Steel acts in an advisory role for companies, trade unions and politicians regarding their gender-balance problems and also acts as spokesperson on these issues externally.
By-law 1. The management board represents the network, takes decisions and makes statements in the name of the network. The board is chosen by the network members every other year before the end of May.
By-law 2. The management board appoints an election committee of at least two persons who are not members of the board.
By-law 3. Each member is free to arrange meetings and other activities as well as to form subgroups within the network.
By-law 4. The membership is personal and every member is free to express herself as a member of the network; however all statements made are personal and not collective.
By-law 5. As member of the network, one commits oneself to the network’s overall purpose: to create meeting places for women in the respective sectors and to strive for more gender equality at workplaces.
By-law 6. The network’s activities, statements and counselling always reflect due concern for the operations, image and good reputation of the companies as well the equal rights and obligations of women and men in working life.
